John Simpson - Recent Work

John’s relief prints are a response to his feelings for the reality around him. The actual place depicted is not of prime importance to him as the aim is to express, in pattern and colour, an emotion about the reality (whatever the ‘reality’ is).

John uses a multi-block method, and each print is produced from a series of hand-cut blocks (up to seven in number) individually inked and printed in sequence on his press- a converted Victorian mangle. Each print will vary in some degree from every other print in the ‘edition’. John sees this as a strength and freedom, as he sometimes feels the need to change the subtleties of colour and mood during the course of printing an edition, which may take place over a time span of weeks or months. As such an ‘edition’ is not a set of identical prints, but a series of original prints, from the same blocks, liable to change subtly with his mood.

There is something very special about John’s work: the colour and tone, and the simplistic reality of the block print come together to make an almost dreamlike image, where reality is recognisable but the sense of space and beauty enables a different perspective.
