Creative Club - Big Blue
The Young Artists at Wisbech St Mary Primary School worked on an outdoor installation based on the themes of recycling and marine conservation.
With the support of the Marine Conservation Society the young artists learnt about issues affecting our oceans and they developed their ideas from sketches, samples and models into a full size sculptural installation.
The sculpture explores the issues of marine conservation and allows the viewer to interact with it by going inside and experiencing a different situation, where the light filters through coloured plastic and gives the impression of being under the sea. Plastic bag jelly fish float gently above and orange plastic coral grows on the ground.
The sculpture was installed at the front of the school and the Young Artists held a Big Blue Day at school where they invited everyone in the school to come dressed in blue and become a part of the Big Blue installation.
The Marine Conservation Society were so impressed by the sculpture created by the Young Artists that they took it with them to exhibit at the Dive Show at the NEC in November 2008.
‘Karen and her group of Young Artists were a great inspiration to everyone at MCS. I was so impressed with the way they took the issue of all the plastic litter on our beaches to their hearts. Their intuitive and creative responses demonstrated that they’d really thought about how rubbish impacts wildlife and how in their day to day life small changes can be made to improve things. Thank you all so much for your support!’
