Penny Carkeek

Penny Carkeek trained at The Norwich Art School and Leicester College of Art. Her introduction to free machine embroidery was whilst she was at Norwich. “It was taught in connection with Dress Design, but I found it to be very “thin” and I didn’t think about it for another twenty years!” At that time Penny was making appliqué pictures and began to add some machine embroidery to enhance them but then felt that this was too “solid”, so it was left for a further few years!

Penny taught Art & Textiles at Wisbech Grammar School (eventually becoming Head of Textiles) and it was during this time she came across fabric dyes which could be used like water colour paint but on material. After some experimentation she found the addition of machine embroidery enhanced the picture giving it a very satisfying sense of depth and texture, and so “stitch painting” was born!

Penny’s stitch paintings have been exhibited across East Anglia over the years, and she has also shown work in water colour, pastel drawings of animals and animal stone door stops.
