Atelier East

Once Upon A Time - Suzanne Woolcott: 26 June - 21 July 2012

Atelier East are absolutely delighted to be bringing an exhibition of work by this internationally acclaimed artist to Wisbech. Welcome to the world of Suzanne Woolcott - A beautiful 30-ish, stripey-sock wearing, full time, self-taught artist.

Back in 2007 Atelier East’s Director, Karen Harvey, was curating an exhibition to raise money for Papworth Hospital and came across Glasgow based Suzanne’s work on eBay. After being invited to take part in the charity exhibition, we encouraged Suzanne to have her first ever solo exhibition, and curated it for her at the Angles Theatre in Wisbech. Entitled ‘Red Apples’ it was an exciting mix of digital and traditional painting, and it went down a storm!

In the five years that have passed, Suzanne’s work, published under the name of ‘Gorjuss’, has gone on to be recognised worldwide, with fan clubs across the globe, exhibitions in Hong Kong and New York, and an international deal with SANTORO which has seen Suzanne’s designs reproduced on many exciting products, and sold through many stores across the world.

‘Gorjuss is about bringing beautiful, emotional art into everyone’s lives. I love to play with words, especially taking things literally, but I also think that love runs deep within all my art.’ says Suzanne of her work.

Suzanne has recently become disabled and has lost the ability to walk, but it hasn’t stopped her from continuing to look for the positives and pursue her dreams.

‘This has made a huge difference to my life, and I think I may be going through the greatest challenge of my life right now‘ says Suzanne, ‘Everything is taking twice as long, or more, to do right now.  Art-wise, it has to be just learning and learning to create what’s in my head. Getting that ability can take time. I love to learn. Learning should never stop!’

The exhibition, entitled ‘Once Upon A Time: Welcome to the World of Suzanne Woolcott’ runs from 26 June - 21 July at Wisbech & Fenland Museum. The gallery will be filled with large digital paintings and information panels about the artist and entry is free.

We are really lucky to be able to share Suzanne’s work through this exhibition. It’s going to be a wonderful chance for people to learn about her work and the challenges she has met. Suzanne is an absolute inspiration and we are really proud to be working with such a strong willed and talented artist.
